Fleet software vendors without an AI answer yet, and what that means for a buyer
RTA and MaintainX both shipped a conversational AI feature in 2026. AssetWorks and Chevin FleetWave, two names public fleets know well, have not published one of their own as of this writing. That gap is worth understanding plainly, not as a knock on either vendor, but as a fact a buyer evaluating now should walk in knowing.
Who has shipped, who has not
RTA reached general availability on Ron360 in June 2026, built into Fleet360. MaintainX already had MaintainX Assist, gated to its Enterprise tier. On the other side of the ledger, AssetWorks has not published a conversational AI assistant for its FleetFocus system, a claim that appears on RTA's own comparison page, and Chevin FleetWave's global head of product said in comments reported in April 2026 that AI remained part of the company's longer term roadmap rather than something already shipped.
Two things worth flagging about that pairing of facts. The AssetWorks claim comes from RTA, a direct competitor, so it is one company's characterization of another, not neutral reporting, and worth verifying directly with AssetWorks before treating it as settled. The Chevin comment is from April 2026, five months old at the time of this writing, in a category where vendors are announcing new AI features every few weeks. It may no longer be current.
A gap in AI features is not a gap in the underlying system
It is worth saying directly, an FMIS without a conversational AI layer is not automatically a weaker system. AssetWorks and Chevin both have long track records in public fleet, and the core job of an FMIS, tracking assets, work orders, costs, and compliance, does not require a chat interface to do well. Plenty of fleet staff are entirely comfortable running reports the traditional way, and a missing AI feature says nothing about how well the underlying data model, the reporting, or the support actually holds up.
What it does mean is narrower. A fleet that has grown used to asking a plain language question and getting an instant answer from RTA or MaintainX will not currently get that same experience from AssetWorks or Chevin. Whether that matters depends entirely on how much a given team actually uses that kind of feature.
What to ask directly, instead of assuming
If a conversational AI layer matters to your evaluation, ask the vendor for their current roadmap and a real date, not a general statement about being AI forward. Ask whether any feature already in preview or early access changes the picture since the last public comment you found. And separate that question cleanly from a different one entirely, whether the fleet also needs a way to capture what its own senior technicians know, which no FMIS vendor's roadmap, shipped or not, currently addresses.
That second question does not depend on which FMIS a fleet runs, or whether it has a chat box built in. It is answered by a knowledge layer, not by an update to the fleet record system.

As of this writing, AssetWorks and Chevin FleetWave have not published one of their own. This is based on public materials and a competitor's own comparison claims, and should be reconfirmed given how quickly the category is moving.
Why does a gap like this matter to a buyer?
It does not mean the underlying system is weak. It means a buyer should not assume an AI layer is coming on a known timeline, and should ask the vendor directly rather than assume.
Does this gap affect whether a fleet needs a separate knowledge layer?
