Same fault code, different fix every time, why that happens and what it costs a shop

Plenty of fault codes are genuinely ambiguous by design, a single code standing in for several possible underlying problems, and the manual lists them all without ranking which is most likely on a specific fleet's specific units. In that gap, a technician's own experience takes over. One tech, burned once by a sensor issue on this exact code, checks the sensor first. Another, who once traced it to a connector, checks that first instead. Both are reasonable. Repair time on the identical problem swings depending on who is assigned, since one technician's first guess happens to be right and another's does not. General training cannot cover fleet specific patterns

More training helps a technician get better at diagnosis in general, but it does not tell him which cause is actually more common on this specific fleet's units. That pattern is local, built from this fleet's own repair history, and it exists nowhere a general training program would ever cover it. A technician can be excellent at his job and still guess wrong on a fleet specific pattern he has simply never encountered yet.
