Severe service adjustments: why generic intervals fail in extreme climates
An OEM maintenance schedule is written for moderate conditions. A fleet running in extreme cold, extreme heat, heavy dust, or constant stop and go duty is not in that category, and the manual usually says so, offering a severe service adjustment that is itself still a general figure. The number that actually holds up for one specific fleet in one specific climate almost always comes from a person's experience, not a table.
The categories OEM manuals usually name
Extreme heat or extreme cold. Extended idling. Frequent stop and go driving rather than steady highway miles. Dusty or off road conditions. Heavy load or towing. A unit that fits two or three of these is already well outside the moderate conditions a standard interval assumes, and most manuals acknowledge that with a shorter severe service schedule alongside the standard one.
Even the severe service number is not tuned to your fleet
A severe service interval is a real improvement over ignoring the conditions entirely, but it is still a broad figure meant to cover any fleet that qualifies as severe, from a delivery van in a mild coastal city to a plow truck in a northern winter. Those are both technically severe service, and they do not wear the same way. A fleet running genuinely extreme conditions, sustained sub zero winters, constant dust, extended idle for auxiliary equipment, often needs an interval tighter than even the published severe service figure, and that number does not come from any manual at all.
Where the actual adjustment comes from
In practice, a senior technician or shop supervisor who has watched units fail early or hold up fine over several seasons in this specific climate ends up setting the real working interval, informally, often through nothing more than habit and memory. He knows a particular engine variant needs its fluid changed sooner in this yard's winters than the book suggests, because he has seen what happens when it does not. That knowledge is genuinely valuable and genuinely nowhere written down, which means it lives entirely inside his judgment until someone captures it.
What happens when the adjustment was never recorded
A new supervisor, a different shift, or a replacement after a retirement has no way to know the real interval unless someone told them directly. The default that fills that gap is usually the published severe service figure, which is safer than the standard schedule but still not tuned to this fleet's actual experience. The fleet either drifts back toward the generic number, risking the early failures the previous adjustment was built to prevent, or spends months relearning through its own failures what the departed person already knew.
